Minister of the Environment Protection and Agriculture Mr. Levan Davitashvili met with the heads of the National Environmental Agency. The Minister heard information about the results of the current year of the agency and discussed the plans for 2022.

It was noted at the meeting that the most important achievement for the country is the meteorological radar installed in Kutaisi, which will determine the amount and intensity of precipitation in almost the entire territory of western Georgia, which ensures timely delivery of information on floods and avalanches caused by them to the relevant agencies.

Installation of the similar meteorological radar is nearing completion in the vicinity of Tbilisi (in the village of Kiketi).

The National Environmental Agency has made significant changes in terms of technical re-equipment in this year. Purchased 13 units of automatic meteorological stations, 50 units of meteorological checkpoints and 21 units of hydrological checkpoints, as well as high-precision measuring portable control devices, installed in Alazani-Iori and Khrami-Debeda basins with 12 water stations.

The network of monitoring fresh groundwater in the country has been expanded, 10 new automatic stations have been set up in Kakheti region. The stations are equipped with the latest hydrogeological equipment.

At the meeting with the Minister, the achievements in improving air quality monitoring and technical re-equipment were summarized; At this stage, the agency is working on the introduction of validation procedures for data received from air quality monitoring stations.

New aquaculture legislation was developed by the Agency and a new Aquaculture Law was adopted on 24 June 2020, laying the groundwork for enhanced activities in the sector, including in-depth aquaculture in inland waters and in the development of extensive aquaculture in inland lakes and reservoirs. The law will protect the environment and set standards for the development of aquaculture production. The law came into force on March 1 this year.
