Compliance with the aquaculture regulations defined by the current aquaculture legislation in the country and implementation of activities based on the aquaculture permit

Licenses

From March 1, 2023, the Law of Georgia "About Aquaculture" came into force. According to the assessment of relevant international organizations and experts, the law fully meets international standards.

The goal of the state is to promote the sustainable development of the economically profitable aquaculture sector in the country. Adherence to the aquaculture regulations defined by the current legislation in the country, including the implementation of activities on the basis of an aquaculture permit, is important for the development of local production in the mentioned field and for establishing a place on international markets. As of today, about 50 applications for permits have been submitted to the National Environment Agency. The National Environment Agency provides assistance to interested persons who have an aquaculture farm in filling out an application for an aquaculture permit. Detailed information regarding obtaining an aquaculture permit can be obtained from the relevant service of the National Environmental Agency (tel. 2 43 95 26).

It should be noted that the development of the field of aquaculture is significantly dependent on the correct and effective use of natural water resources in the country. From 2024, preferential fees for aquaculture farms will enter into force, which provides for minimum rates for the use of water resources.

It should be emphasized that in all developed countries of the world water use for commercial purposes is paid. In Georgia, established water usage fees for aquaculture farms do not exceed 1% of farm profits. Fee payment is provided once a year.

It should be noted that as a result of cooperation between the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the development of the long-term national strategy and action plan for the development of aquaculture, which provides for the improvement of laboratory services, technical and technological modernization of aquaculture development, has already been completed.
