Final conference on improvement of air quality monitoring took place
Environmental pollution monitoring
At the conference, organized by the National Environmental Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, the improvement of monitoring of ambient air quality was discussed.
Representatives of the National Environmental Agency and invited guests reviewed the activities and results achieved in improving air quality management and monitoring under the project.
It is important to note that the automatic air quality monitoring network is expanding. The concentration of atmospheric pollutants is constantly monitored. In addition, air quality indicators are measured in 30 cities in Georgia. I would like to underline the support of the international community aimed at strengthening the country’s air pollution monitoring capabilities," said Vasil Gedevanishvili, Head of the National Environmental Agency.
In the framework of the project, with the participation of Georgian and European experts, the air quality management plan of the central zone for 2023-2025 was developed, which was approved by the Decree of the Government of Georgia N1431 of 7 August 2023. The Plan provides for the adoption of appropriate measures to improve the air quality in the central zone and is in line with the obligations and relevant directives of the EU-Georgia Association Agreement as defined by national legislation.
The implementation of the project has significantly contributed to the strengthening of the country’s air quality modelling capabilities, which was started in the previous phase, and has laid the groundwork for the initiation of activities in this direction.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, the National Environmental Agency, international organizations, the State and non-governmental sector.
The event took place in the framework of the project «Improvement of capacities for air quality policy development through the implementation of integrated air pollution monitoring tools».
The project «Improving air quality policy development capacity through integrated air pollution monitoring tools» was implemented with the support of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of Sweden.
