A consultative meeting was organized by the National Environmental Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture on a programme to promote the establishment of threat-forecasting platforms and the implementation of an early warning system at the national level.

The programme aims to develop a relevant national protocol involving all stakeholders, taking into account best international practices and experiences.

"The programme is complex enough to serve as an early warning system. From this point of view, the most important work has been done by the Agency’s Hydrometeorology and Geological Departments - the identification of geological hazards and the preparation of relevant maps. As for the implementation of an effective risk response system, it is important to ensure the participation of local government and relevant agencies," said Vasil Gedevanishvili, head of the National Environmental Agency.

The consultation was attended by Nino Antadze, Head of the Energy and Environment Portfolio of the UN Development Programme and Giorgi Arsoshvili, Director of the Public Safety Management Centre (112). Meeting with foreign experts invited as part of the programme.

The invited experts shared with the participants international practices and experiences.

The meeting was held within the framework of the project «Expansion of the multilateral early warning system and use of climate information in Georgia», which is implemented by the Government of Georgia and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). with the support of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the governments of Sweden and Switzerland.
