An additional automatic station was added to the air quality monitoring network in Tbilisi
Environmental pollution monitoring
In Tbilisi, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and the National Environmental Agency, in cooperation with the Kingdom of Sweden and the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida), have added a new automatic air quality monitoring station. By the end of 2023, the air quality monitoring network of the National Environmental Agency will be expanded with 8 automatic and 1 mobile stations.
The event was attended by the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Otar Shamugia, First Deputy Minister Nino Tandilashvili, Head of the Development Cooperation Department of the Swedish Embassy, Deputy Head of Mission Erik Iles, as well as representatives of the Ministry and the National Environmental Agency.
Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Otar Shamugia addressed the participants of the meeting and noted that the support of the partner organizations is invaluable in the direction of expanding the air monitoring network in the country.
“Improving air quality is one of the priorities. This year we have had several important initiatives at the legislative level. We have introduced various regulations for the industrial sector as well as for road transport, which is a significant pollutant in large cities. With the support of the Government of Sweden, we have opened another monitoring station of very modern standards in Tbilisi, and it should be noted that by the end of the year, also with their support, we will have eight new stations throughout the country. This project is ongoing, and from next year, with the support of the European Union, the whole country will be covered. There will be 27 such stations throughout the country, which is important for us to have reliable information on air quality. I would like to thank our partners for their support and reiterate that we will continue to implement appropriate measures to improve the air quality in the country"- said Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Otar Shamugia.
“Today is an important day for air quality management in Georgia. Another automatic station has been installed in Tbilisi, thus improving air quality monitoring. It should be noted that the Government of Georgia has taken important steps to reduce air pollution in the transport, construction, and agriculture sectors, which was positively reflected in the EU report. It is also worth noting the significant contribution of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and the National Environmental Agency in improving monitoring. The Swedish Government, for its part, will continue to support Georgia to have an appropriate monitoring system in this direction" - said Erik Iles, Head of Development Cooperation of the Swedish Embassy in Georgia, Deputy Head of Mission.
Information obtained from a modern air quality monitoring station allows the planning of new activities and projects that will further improve air quality in the future. The specified data will be posted on the agency’s portal www.air.gov.ge.
