Presentation of Shovi and Nergeti reports

At the meeting, the conclusions and reports prepared by the specialists of the National Environmental Protection Agency on the events that occurred on August 3, 2023, in Racha, Shovi, and on February 6 of this year in the village of Nergeti in the Bagdati municipality were discussed at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture.

The documents presented include information on the main causes of the disaster, its consequences, and recommendations. Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Otar Shamugia spoke about the frequency of natural disasters caused by climate change and emphasized the importance of determining the causes of natural disasters, determining the possibility or impossibility of their prevention, and preparing scientifically based and objective conclusions.

The minister spoke about the importance of developing civil security and effective disaster risk management systems, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts between Georgian and foreign specialists, educational institutions, and independent experts.

"Strengthening the capabilities of the National Environmental Agency is a top priority. Last year, we allocated additional funds for the acquisition of monitoring systems. It is also important to reinforce the agency with appropriate human resources. Compared to last year, this year we have allocated 13 million laris to support the expansion of monitoring systems to the maximum extent possible. We also plan to assess glacier valleys and landslide areas across the country. We have planned cooperation with the Finnish Meteorological Service, which is one of the most advanced in the world, regarding the maintenance of the information system," said Otar Shamugia.
The conclusions and report prepared for the meeting at the Ministry were presented by the head of the National Environmental Agency, Vasil Gedevanishvili. Experts in the field emphasized the importance of the presented conclusions and report. It was noted that the National Environmental Agency has conducted and continues to conduct work of particular importance in assessing and managing processes. Specialists, experts, and scientists in the field expressed their readiness to actively collaborate with the ministry and the National Environmental Agency in addressing issues.
The documents presented at the meeting were compiled with the involvement of agency specialists based on observations of geological, meteorological, and hydrological parameters, historical and current data, including decoded information from satellite, radar, and aerial photographs, as well as field hydro meteorological data, geological research, and office processing of the obtained data.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, was attended by the First Deputy Minister Nino Tandilashvili, employees of the National Environmental Agency, representatives of educational institutions, specialists, and experts.
