The National Environmental Agency Launches Study of 22 Glacial River Valleys in Georgia

The National Environmental Agency has initiated a study of 22 glacial river valleys in Georgia. According to the long-term climate forecast from the World Meteorological Organization, a rise in ambient air temperature is expected in the coming years. This increase will contribute to the intensification of negative processes affecting glaciers. As a result, the risk of natural disasters may increase both globally and within Georgia.

Given the increasing hazards in glacial valleys, it is essential to identify both glacial and cascading threats, conduct a detailed risk assessment for settlements and infrastructure, and identify settlements located in high-risk zones to develop appropriate mitigation measures.

The goal of these surveys is to minimize the negative impacts of climate change and address the potential for spontaneous natural events in the glacial valleys.

The study will be conducted in two stages. The first stage will focus on identifying hazards at the glaciers, while the second stage will develop preventive measures for the identified risks.

The surveys will be carried out by GEOTEST AG, a highly qualified and experienced Swiss consulting company. GEOTEST AG previously installed a warning system following the glacial mudflow in the Devdoraki-Amali valley, assessed natural events in the Shovi resort, and prepared relevant reports.
