22 March is World Water Day

According to the United Nations General Assembly's decision, March 22 is designated as the International Day for the Protection of Water Resources. The establishment and celebration of World Water Day serve as a reminder to society of the importance of safeguarding water resources. In the context of ongoing global warming and climate change, the rational management and utilization of water resources is one of the most significant challenges.

In celebration of World Water Day, specialists from the National Environmental Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture collected samples from the Aragvi River.

The physicochemical parameters of the collected samples were assessed on-site, while organic and inorganic pollutants, as well as heavy metals, will be analyzed in the agency's ambient air, water, and soil analysis laboratory. This laboratory is equipped with advanced analytical tools and fully complies with modern standards. It is accredited according to the international ISO 17025 standard.

It is important to note that, in recent periods, the National Environmental Agency has taken significant steps to enhance water quality monitoring. The monitoring network has been expanded, and the number of parameters measured has increased.

Additionally, a law on water resources management has been developed in Georgia, set to take effect by 2026. This law will promote the protection of water bodies, including the Black Sea, and ensure the sustainable use of water resources, taking into account the principles of sustainable development and the interests of both present and future generations.

Within the framework of the EU-Georgia Association Agreement, enhancing water resources monitoring is a crucial prerequisite for fulfilling the obligations outlined in the EU Water Framework Directive and for implementing the principles of integrated water resources management.
