World Meteorological Day is on March 23!

Hydrometeorology

The establishment of World Meteorological Day on March 23, 1950, is linked to the entry into force of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Convention. Georgia became a member of this organization in 1992, and since then, the country has participated in the celebration of World Meteorological Day.

In recent years, the National Environmental Agency has taken significant steps to expand the hydrometeorological observation network throughout Georgia. The monitoring network has been upgraded and equipped in accordance with modern standards, and new meteorological radars have been installed. These radars help gather and deliver information about processes triggered by heavy precipitation to the relevant authorities.

It is also worth noting that the National Environmental Agency's budget has increased this year, which will facilitate the further expansion and strengthening of the modern monitoring network. With the updated budget, the Agency plans to purchase and install additional meteorological stations, introduce advanced information and communication technologies (ICT), and study 22 glacial river valleys. This research aims to mitigate the negative consequences of potential natural events caused by climate change in these valleys.

In addition to strengthening its technical capabilities, an essential challenge for the field is attracting new employees. Therefore, the Agency continues its active efforts in this direction and invites interested students to apply for internships, ensuring their involvement in the Agency's daily activities and promoting professions in which younger generations have shown less interest.
