Aquaculture

Specialists of the Agency attended a training session focused on fish genetics in Trabzon.

The training in fish genetics was held at the Central Fisheries Research Institute (SUMAE) with the support of the Central Asian and Caucasian Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission (CACFish). Specialists from the Fisheries, Aquaculture and Water Biodiversity Department of the National Environmental Agency took part in the training.

The training course covered methods for sample collection, storage, and processing for molecular genetic studies, including DNA isolation from tissue samples and species identification using the PCR method. The application of genetic methods for identifying aquatic biological resources represents an innovative approach in biodiversity research and is utilized in aquaculture and fish breeding.

Participation in such training programs enhances the professional development of specialists at the National Environmental Agency, facilitates the sharing of experience, and promotes the introduction of new innovative methods in the field.

It should be noted that the country has significant potential for the development of aquaculture. In this regard, important reforms have been implemented by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, leading to the European Union officially recognizing the fishing certificates issued by relevant Georgian authorities on April 2, 2024. This recognition is crucial for Georgian entrepreneurs, as it allows for the export of Black Sea fish and fishery products to the EU market, which will, in turn, contribute significantly to the development of the Georgian economy.
