June 2 is Mtkvari protection day
Environmental pollution monitoring
Mtkvari Protection Day was established by the initiative of the "Mtkvar-Araksi" coalition, in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan in 1999.
The National Environmental Agency conducts regular monitoring of the Mtkvari River basin quality, assessing 20 points monthly and 34 points quarterly. The results of these studies are published on the National Environmental Agency's website.
In connection with Mtkvari Protection Day, specialists from the National Environmental Agency collected water samples from the Mtkvari River. On-site, they determined the physicochemical parameters of the samples, while testing for organic and inorganic pollutants and heavy metals will be conducted at the agency's ambient air, water, and soil analysis laboratory, which is equipped with modern standards and high-precision analytical tools. The results of these tests will be announced in a few days.
The Mtkvari is the main river of Georgia. Its basin spans northeastern Turkey, all of central and eastern Georgia, nearly all of Azerbaijan, all of Armenia, and northwestern Iran. The total area of the river basin is 188,000 square kilometers, with a total length of 1,515 kilometers.
