National Environmental Agency

Study visit to Great Britain

Aquaculture

Specialists from the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Water Biodiversity of the National Environmental Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia with the grant received from winning the International Education Center project competition for the "Overseas Qualification Raising Program," attended the UK Center for Ecology & Hydrology, where they participated in training focused on the identification of freshwater phytoplankton.

Phytoplankton is important in the formation of water quality and determines the ecological state of the sea.

Individual groups and species of phytoplankton serve as biological indicators in accordance with the framework directives of both water and marine strategies. By studying their quantitative and qualitative characteristics, it is possible to assess the level of eutrophication in the reservoir and determine its ecological status.

The training course included both theoretical and practical components. Specialists became familiar with the latest methods for studying phytoplankton and modern techniques employed in research. As part of the training, sampling and processing were conducted at the research stations of the River Thames and Ridley Lakes, followed by laboratory research and analysis of the collected samples at the British Center for Ecology and Hydrology.

Participation in the mentioned course assists specialists of the Agency’s professional development of agency specialists, exchange of experiences, and, consequently, the implementation of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture principles in the country.
