The Head of the National Environmental Agency, Mr. Vasil Gedevanishvili, the Deputy Head, Tamar Sharashidze and the specialists of the Agency met with glaciologists from Monash University in Australia, Maine University in the United States and University of France. The delegation of scientists visiting Georgia was led by researcher Levan Tielidze of Australia's Monash University.
The Head of the National Environmental Agency introduced to the invited guests the information about the ongoing glacial studies in the glacial valleys across the country, the monitoring methods implemented in the agency, as well as the modern approaches in the direction of field-expedition and remote sensing and the activities planned for the future.
"It is essential for us to collaborate with leading research universities in other countries. Their expertise will be invaluable in monitoring and evaluating glacial processes, particularly given the heightened activity of these processes in the Caucasus as a result of climate change. This collaboration will facilitate the mutual exchange of data and information, as well as enhance our monitoring efforts," stated Mr. Vasil Gedevanishvili, Head of the National Environmental Agency.
The meeting underscored the increasing frequency of natural glacial events in the country due to climate change and highlighted the necessity for ongoing studies to evaluate associated threats and risks.
The parties discussed the current processes affecting the glaciers of Georgia, the monitoring aspects of glacial valleys, and potential avenues for future collaboration.
