Black Sea water quality is within normal limits along the entire perimeter of the Georgian coast
Environmental pollution monitoring
The National Environmental Agency prioritizes the control of the quality of the Black Sea water; accordingly, the agency conducts continuous monitoring at 12 points every month. The studies determine the concentration of hydrobiological and chemical parameters, including 13 heavy metals, total petroleum hydrocarbons, 16 polyaromatic hydrocarbons and other physicochemical parameters.
Samples taken from the Black Sea are sent for analysis to the National Environmental Agency’s accredited laboratory for atmospheric air, water and soil analysis, which is equipped with high-precision analytical instruments and fully meets modern standards.
The head of the National Environmental Agency, Elene Ghubianuri, Minister of Agriculture of Adjara, Zaza Shavadze and Deputy Minister Mirian Katamadze were familiarized with the next process of sampling from the Black Sea water on site.
“According to the laboratory studies conducted by the National Environmental Agency so far, the water quality of the Black Sea is within the norm along the entire perimeter of the Georgian coast. The agency continuously monitors the water quality of the Black Sea throughout the year. It is noteworthy that the National Environmental Agency, in accordance with the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, continues to actively work on improving the monitoring system,” said Elene Ghubianuri.
As noted by the Minister of Agriculture of Ajara, Zaza Shavadze, water quality studies are conducted continuously. All interested parties have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with information on the quality of sea water.
The results of laboratory studies conducted by the National Environmental Agency are published on the agency’s website.
