Students will be involved in collecting and processing climate data

Hydrometeorology

The memorandum of cooperation was signed between the National Environment Agency and Ilia State University.

Under the memorandum, students will participate in modeling hydrometeorological hazards in Georgian river basins and compiling relevant maps. Due to the current epidemiological situation, students will be gradually involved in data collection and mapping and will be led by a group of international experts invited by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) together with specialists from Georgia.

The online event was attended by Deputy Minister of Environmental protection and Agriculture Nino Tandilashvili, UNDP Resident Representative Louise Winton and Director of the Swiss Cooperation Agency Daniel Mevl.

"Research is crucial for modeling and mapping hydrometeorological and geological hazards. In cooperation with universities, our field of work will be expanded, and students will be involved in data collection, processing and analysis, "- said the Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture, Nino Tandilashvili. According to Louise Winton, UNDP Director-General, with the support of the United Nations Development Program, cooperation between universities and government agencies will be strengthened, which will enable Georgian researchers to study better climate change and to make their contribution for reducing the risk of climate disasters.

It should be noted that the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, the National Environment Agency is involved in a large-scale program that serves Georgia's adaptation to climate change. The project is supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and will involve in the other higher education institutions in the future, which in turn will help train highly qualified personnel in the field of disaster risk management.
