Chemical and biological studies of water quality on the Iori River have been carried out
Environmental pollution monitoring
With the involvement of specialists from the National Environment Agency of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture and the Department of Environmental Supervision, the process of introducing a surface water quality monitoring methodology in accordance with the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) is underway in Georgia.
The above mentioned directive, except to the "observational" and "operational" monitoring, also provides for "investigative" monitoring to verify ecological and chemical status, which is mainly used in the absence of data. For this purpose, a team of experts selected research points on the River Iori, where, at the facilities employed in the extraction of sand-gravel from the riverbed, the Agency's specialists conducted chemical and biological studies of water quality.
The "investigative" monitoring is carried out within the framework of the EU Water Initiative Plus for the Eastern Partnership (EUWI + 4EaP) project, with the support of the Austrian Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt) and the French International Water Office / International de l’Eau.
