A working meeting of the “Subregional Group for the Assessment of Black Sea Stocks (SGSABS)” was held at the Batumi Regional Office of the National Environment Agency, with the support of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean.
The meeting was attended by specialists from the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Biodiversity of the Agency, as well as leading experts from Germany, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Turkey and Ukraine.
The participants discussed the biological data of the priority commercial species of the Black Sea (capshia, hontkara, horse mackerel, flounder, catfish, whiting, carp, rapana) on growth-age parameters, maturity and spawning, as well as reproduction periods, distribution area and natural mortality.
Within the framework of the meeting, data will be prepared for the assessment and mathematical modeling of fish stocks of commercial importance in the Black Sea, on the basis of which the assessment and forecasting of commercial fish stocks distributed in the coastal waters of Georgia will be carried out. This activity will contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of fish resources in Georgia.
The Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Biodiversity Department of the National Environment Agency, with the aim of developing sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, actively continues its cooperation with the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (FAO/GFCM) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
It is noteworthy that, with the support of GFCM, it is planned to provide technical equipment for the Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Biodiversity Department of the Agency and retrain specialists to standardize hydroacoustic surveys, in order to harmonize research methods for major commercial fish stocks.
