A Letter of Agreement was signed between the National Environmental Agency and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), within the framework of which the project “Monitoring, Data Collection, and Awareness Raising in Georgian Black Sea Fisheries” is being implemented.

The project aims to describe the small-scale fisheries (SSF) sector in Georgia, collect socio-economic data on fishers, establish a database, protect marine biodiversity, and raise awareness in this field.

As part of the project, a working meeting was held to discuss the challenges in the fisheries sector and issues faced by coastal fishers. The importance of ensuring cooperation and transparency between fishers and other stakeholders was emphasized.

Additionally, based on guidelines developed by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), a training was conducted for staff of the National Environmental Agency, the Environmental Supervision Department, and the Border Police Coast Guard, as well as for local fishers. The training focused on the “safe handling and release of accidentally caught sturgeon species and Black Sea spiny dogfish in the Black Sea”.

The project is supported by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
