International Day for the Protection of the Black Sea has been observed since 1996, after representatives of six Black Sea basin countries signed the Black Sea Strategic Action Plan in Istanbul.

The Environmental Protection and Agriculture Ministry’s National Environmental Agency continuously monitors the water quality of the Black Sea. In the current year, the study area has been expanded, and research is now carried out monthly at 14 locations. Hydrobiological and chemical parameters are measured, including 13 heavy metals, total petroleum hydrocarbons, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and other physical-chemical parameters.

It is noteworthy that the National Environmental Agency also conducts important research in the Black Sea on water ecology and aquatic biodiversity.

At the same time, annual scientific research is carried out in Georgia’s Black Sea waters to assess fish resources and determine fish stocks.
