The Head of the Meteorology Department of the National Environmental Agency, Ramaz Chitanava, attended the plenary session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) held in Lima, Republic of Peru.

The aim of this year’s meeting was to discuss issues related to the preparation of the Seventh Assessment Report on the physical processes of climate change, its mitigation, and adaptation.

At the plenary session, IPCC member countries reached an agreement on the scientific content of the methodological report on technologies for carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere, as well as methods for carbon capture, utilization, and storage. The working groups also agreed on the 2026 work plan for the preparation of the Seventh Climate Change Assessment Report.

The results of the next IPCC climate change assessment report are expected to significantly support the implementation of effective national climate policy in Georgia, particularly in mitigating potential negative impacts of climate change and developing scientifically based adaptation measures.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is a leading international organization studying climate change, established in 1988 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The organization brings together 195 member states. Based on objective and transparent approaches, the IPCC assesses existing scientific, technical, and socio-economic information related to climate change risks, potential impacts, adaptation options, and mitigation measures.
