The National Environmental Agency continues the biological monitoring of surface waters
Aquaculture
The Fisheries,
Aquaculture and Aquatic Biodiversity Department of the National Environmental
Agency carried out ichthyological monitoring of Georgia’s surface waters.
The
Chorokhi–Adjaristskali basin section was selected as a pilot area, while
monitoring stations were defined along different sections of the rivers, taking
into account habitat characteristics.
Within the
framework of fieldwork, fishing was conducted for scientific research purposes
in compliance with Georgian legislation. This involved identifying species and
taking necessary measurements of the collected material, after which the fish
were returned alive to their natural environment. The analysis of samples and
processing of data will be carried out in stages, as part of a long-term
scientific research process.
The aim of the research is to assess the ecological status of rivers in accordance with the Law of Georgia on Water Resources and the principles of the Water Framework Directive. Fish species diversity is one of the key biological quality elements (BQE), reflecting the ecological condition of water bodies and the dynamics of changes. The obtained data are important for assessing river ecological status and for developing a long-term monitoring system.
