Environmental Assessment

The first meeting of the Commission for determining compensatory/adequate measures for the remediation of significant damage was held at the National Environmental Agency, which operates on the basis of the Law of Georgia “On Environmental Liability.” The meeting was opened by the Chair of the Commission, Deputy Head of the Agency, Archil Adamia.

The purpose of the Commission is to determine compensatory/adequate measures to remedy significant environmental damage in an area adjacent to the damaged site or in another area. This procedure is carried out in accordance with Article 9 of the Law, which provides for the implementation of appropriate measures by the companies responsible for the damage on selected compensatory territories.

Within the framework of the meeting, the members of the Commission discussed alternative measures for remedying significant damage caused to land resources within state forest territories and agricultural land in the municipalities of Dmanisi and Bolnisi, as well as to surface water bodies in the municipalities of Chiatura, Zestaponi, Terjola, and Ambrolauri.

As a result of the discussion, a decision was made to implement forest restoration and afforestation measures on 67.8 hectares within the forest fund boundaries of Bolnisi Municipality, as compensation for significant damage caused to 57.2 hectares of land located within state forest territories. With regard to agricultural land and surface water bodies, the need for further study of the issues was identified.

The Commission is composed of representatives of the National Environmental Agency, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, as well as agencies within the system of the Ministry.
