Deputy Head of the National Environment Agency, Irakli Megrelidze,
who has held the position of Hydrology Advisor for the World Meteorological
Organization (WMO) Regional Association for Europe since last year, attended
the working meeting of the Hydrological Coordination Panel (HCP-8) held in
Geneva, Switzerland.
The purpose of the meeting was to assess the implementation of the
World Meteorological Organization’s Hydrology Action Plan, review the progress
achieved and decisions made, prepare relevant reports for the coordination
panel, and formulate necessary recommendations.
Within the framework of the meeting, participants discussed the
management of hydrological activity coordination and the engagement of global
partners. The meeting also facilitated the sharing of knowledge and experience
on key issues contributing to the development and strengthening of hydrological
services, water resources management, and joint cooperation.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) operates in the fields
of meteorology, climatology, and hydrology. The role of the WMO in climate
change research is particularly significant.
It is noteworthy that Georgia has been a member of the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO) for nearly 30 years. This membership enables
the country to participate in international cooperation, gain access to modern
knowledge and technologies, and strengthen its meteorological observation and
forecasting systems, which is essential for sustainable development and public
safety.
