The National Environment Agency, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and within the framework of the project “Monitoring and Data Collection in the Black Sea Fisheries Sector of Georgia”, conducted a large-scale survey of the rapana population in the Black Sea waters of Georgia.
The project aims to promote sustainable management of the living resources of the Black Sea and improve scientific data.
Samples were collected at 23 pre-selected marine stations using a special fishing vessel and a standard research net, which was transferred to the Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Biodiversity Department of the Agency by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
As part of the study, part of the collected samples will be used for laboratory analyses, which will allow scientists to assess the population structure, biological parameters and ecological status. The remaining individuals were returned to the natural environment.
This study is an important step forward in assessing the state of biological resources in the Black Sea waters of Georgia and their sustainable management. Based on the study, information will be collected on the stocks of the Black Sea rapana population, their distribution, abundance, size-age structure.
The rapana studies were carried out in accordance with the recommendations of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) and are part of the joint scientific cooperation of the countries of the Black Sea region.
