The expansion of the National Environmental Agency's air quality monitoring network across the country continues

Environmental pollution monitoring

With the support of the Government of Georgia, the European Union and the United Nations, a new automatic station has been added to the ambient air quality monitoring network of the National Environment Agency in the village of Tazakendi, Gardabani Municipality. By the end of this year, the air quality monitoring network will be expanded with 9 more automatic stations.

The support to the air quality monitoring network is part of a program funded by the European Union, which is implemented by UN agencies in cooperation with the Austrian Environment Agency.

“Over the past ten years, the Government of Georgia, in accordance with national legislation and international standards, has taken significant steps towards expanding the air quality monitoring network and equipping it with modern technologies. Our priority is to strengthen air quality management through accurate data, targeted actions and raising public awareness, which will create a healthier environment for all citizens of Georgia,” said Tamar Sharashidze, First Deputy Head of the National Environment Agency.

In recent years, the Georgian authorities have taken a number of important steps towards managing ambient air quality, both in the legislative sphere and in terms of implementing practical measures. Of particular note is the support of the international community, which is aimed at strengthening the country's capabilities in this regard.

"The European Union is contributing to improving ambient air quality monitoring in Georgia, identifying sources of pollution and protecting human health, especially in high-risk areas. Where the air is cleaner, human health is better, treatment costs are lower, and the quality of life is higher," said Nicolas Sendrovic, Head of the Development and Cooperation Unit of the European Union Delegation to Georgia.

It is worth noting that 18 ambient air quality monitoring stations are already operating across the country, through which continuous monitoring of ambient air quality is carried out in Tbilisi, Rustavi, Batumi, Kutaisi, Telavi, Akhaltsikhe, Mestia and Zugdidi. Data from the stations are available online at the Ambient Air Quality Portal - www.air.gov.ge.

The event was attended by representatives of the National Environmental Agency, the European Union, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Gardabani Municipality Educational Resource Center.
