In collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the Global Water Partnership (GWP) Georgia Office, the Black Sea and Middle East Flash Flood Early Warning System (BSMEFFGS) Steering Committee event was held in Tbilisi.

The event was opened by Nino Tandilashvili, First Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture.

“Cooperation with international partners gives our country the opportunity to become one of the important centers of climate resilience and early warning systems in the Black Sea region. The Georgian government pays special attention to the modernization of early warning systems. In recent years, significant investments have been made in the development of the observation network, the introduction of modern technologies, the strengthening of forecasting capabilities and the expansion of cooperation with international partners.

The ongoing international project funded by the Green Climate Fund is very important, which has allowed us to completely update the national meteorological and hydrological network. In the past few days, we had quite severe flooding in one of the regions of eastern Georgia. The development of similar events in recent years once again emphasizes how important the development of modern systems is in all countries, especially in the context of climate change. Of course, cooperation with the World Meteorological Organization plays an important role in this process,” said Nino Tandilashvili.

The event was attended by the Head of the National Environmental Agency, Elene Ghubianuri, Deputy Head of the Agency, Permanent Representative of Georgia to the World Meteorological Organization, Irakli Megrelidze, as well as the Deputy Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, Ko Barrett, representatives of the World Meteorological Organization and Georgian specialists in the relevant field.

Within the framework of the event, workshops and training seminars will be held, where flash flood early warning systems, directions for their sustainable development and future priorities will be discussed.

This system helps many countries in the timely assessment and forecasting of floods caused by heavy precipitation, which significantly increases the capabilities of national services to protect the population and infrastructure.

The Executive Committee meetings and the training seminar will be an important platform for sharing experiences, discussing best practices, introducing new technologies and innovative approaches, as well as for further deepening regional cooperation.

It is noteworthy that Georgia has been a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for almost 30 years, which gives the country the opportunity to be involved in international cooperation, receive modern knowledge and technologies, as well as strengthen its own meteorological system, which is important for the sustainable development of the country and the safety of the population.
