A new regulation regarding the state registration of groundwater wells for fresh drinking water came into effect on September 1

At the initiative of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and with the involvement of the National Environmental Agency, a new regulation regarding the state registration of groundwater wells for fresh drinking water has been prepared and entered into force on September 1
The new rule was approved by Government of Georgia Decree No. 424 and defines the procedures for the state registration of groundwater wells for fresh drinking water.
The decree is a significant regulatory act developed to implement the Law of Georgia "On Water Resources Management." The regulation aims to systematically collect data necessary for the sustainable management of groundwater resources for fresh drinking water and to establish a corresponding information database.
The implementation of the new rule marks a significant step toward the protection and sustainable management of groundwater resources for fresh drinking water. The data obtained will facilitate the monitoring of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of water bodies, the assessment of the current situation, and the development of appropriate recommendations.
According to the decree, the state registration of wells will be carried out by the Geology Department of the National Environmental Agency. A hydrogeological database will be established based on the information obtained through the registration process and will be updated periodically.
This regulation does not apply to wells constructed prior to September 1, 2026; nor does it apply to household wells located on citizens' homestead plots, whether constructed before or after September 1, 2026.
