The National Environmental Agency conducted monitoring of glacial valleys across the country
Specialists from the National Environmental Agency have conducted another round of monitoring of glacial valleys across the country. The study aims to assess glacial hazards, identify potential risk zones, and examine the dynamics of processes occurring within these glacial valleys.
As part of the monitoring effort, specialists surveyed the glacial valleys by helicopter, conducted visual and instrumental monitoring via field expeditions, and utilized drones to capture imagery for analyzing current conditions.
Based on the data collected, modern technologies will be used to assess glacial hazards and potential risks nationwide.
For the first time during this monitoring cycle, a modern bathymetric drone was employed to assess the morphometric parameters of lakes located within the glacial valleys.
Amid climate change, processes of glacial degradation are underway in the periglacial zones of the Caucasus Mountains. Observations include the formation of glacial lakes and changes in their surface area, as well as changes in the condition of moraine masses and the dynamics of material accumulated in the valleys. To assess the status of ongoing processes and changes over time, the National Environmental Agency conducts targeted monitoring of relevant areas across various regions of Georgia on an annual basis.
