A consultative meeting with stakeholders regarding drought monitoring and forecasting was held at the National Environmental Agency.
The meeting focused on existing capabilities and ways to improve them for collecting, processing, and disseminating drought-related data and information. Participants also reviewed proposals for developing drought monitoring and forecasting systems, discussing their implementation, data exchange among relevant agencies, and opportunities for more effective information dissemination.
Strengthening drought monitoring and forecasting capabilities is a key component of a large-scale climate program. Implemented with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and the governments of Georgia and Switzerland, the program aims to reduce the risks of climate change-induced disasters.
The project aims to reduce the risks of climate change-induced disasters. One of the program's objectives is to establish platforms for monitoring and forecasting drought risks at the national level and to facilitate the implementation of an early warning system.
The meeting was attended by Irakli Megrelidze, Deputy Head of the National Environmental Agency; agency specialists; representatives from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and its subordinate agencies; as well as representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
