Significant measures have been taken against unreported and unregulated fishing in Georgia
Licenses
With the involvement of the National Environment Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, the reform of fishing vessels authorization was carried out. The aim of the reform, which is in line with EU legislation and international standards, is to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
Within the framework of the reform, for the first time, a fishing vessel flying the Georgian flag was authorized on the maritime territory of the foreign state.
It should be noted that until now, fishing vessels sailing flying the Georgian flag in the maritime space of foreign countries were not authorized. The reform against illegal fishing is an important step forward, both for the sustainable development of the economy and for the observance of international standards for legal fishing.
By implementing this reform, Georgia is fulfilling its obligations under the Association Agreement with the European Union.
